A new polymer five pound note with the serial number AK47 has sold on eBay for a record £80,000.

The new five pound notes, which were released in September and feature an image of the former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, have become a collector’s item when stamped with a low serial number such as AA01 or with AK47.

There are now tens of these notes being offered on the online auction site eBay, some with an asking price £1,000,000.

Gareth Wright of Twickenham told The Sun how he took out ten pounds from a cash machine in the form of two five pound notes, spending one quickly before noticing that on the other was serial number AK47.

Mr Wright said he knew there was a market for the notes but never imagined it would fetch such a price. With other 500,000 views and 100 bids on Ebay the final amount was £80,100.

Mr Wright said he was sceptical of the bids. He told The Independent: "I do think most of these bids are fake but you never know! I can only hope for the best and that someone does want to buy it."
