Man accidentally fires crossbow into cat while demonstrating how it works

A man accidentally fired a crossbow into a cat while demonstrating to a friend how the weapon worked.

Grey and white female Smokey was emerging from beneath a trampoline when the bolt hit her and pierced her lung. The RSPCA said today she was lucky to be alive following the horrific injury.

Her owners were told soon afterwards and she was reported to be on the mend following the incident in Taunton, Somerset.

RSPCA inspector Jo Daniel said: “People should remember crossbows are a weapon and their use should not be taken lightly.

“It only takes one mistake and a life could be at stake – either that of an animal or even a human – so it is essential that the right precautions are taken when using a potentially deadly instrument such as this.

“Being responsible and gaining the right experience before using any weapon is absolutely key and will ensure nasty accidents like this do not happen.”

Ms Daniel said although crossbows are not illegal they should be used in a safe environment.

“Misuse of a weapon such as in this shocking incident is dangerous and costly and Smokey is just lucky to have survived such a devastating ordeal,” she said.
