Hot weather wasps warning

The Red Cross is warning people to beware of 'drunk' wasps.

The insects gorge themselves on fermented fruit and display erratic behaviour, says the charity.

They say people eating outside in the sun are particularly at risk.

The charity says they are more likely to sting and be aggressive when 'drunk'.

Joe Mulligan, British Red Cross head of first aid said: "It’s hilarious that, now worker wasps have finished their life's work, all they are doing now is feasting on fermented fruit and getting ‘drunk’.

"Wasps contain a pheremone and if you swat one, they let it off like an alarm," he said.

This summer has seen an abundance of wasps due to the particularly cold winter and late spring.
