Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge have been rocked by "tremors" as an earthquake measuring up to 7.1 hit the region of India where they are staying.

The army was put on alert after the earthquake - with the epicentre on the India/Myanmar border struck.

William and Kate are understood to be staying at a lodge near Kaziranga national park where they spent the day.

Officials confirmed tremors had been felt across the region. It is not known how big the quake was near them.

But in Guwahati - where the accredited royal press corps is staying tonight before flying to Bhutan tomorrow - had to be evacuated from their hotel by staff after a massive tremor.
