A blazing row erupted among last night's Question Time audience after an audience member made the claim that Britain is one of the "least racist countries" in Europe.
Panellist George Mpanga was provoked by an argument from the member of the audience, who dismissed the idea that Brexit was all about alienating foreigners.
The poet, who writes under the name George the Poet, hit back saying "xenophobia is something a lot of British people harbour in their hearts"
The young man in the audience said: "George have you actually looked at the numbers? The UK is one of the least racist societies actually across Europe."
He went on: "They are talking about ending preferential treatment for Europeans, so we can take people from Singapore and Malaysia and Thailand to come in. That is an open policy."
The King's College London educated poet answered: "Oh phew! Thank you so much. So i didn't get stopped by police sitting outside my mum's house earlier this year?"
The discussion erupted into rage, as onlookers started calling each other racist, and social media users were divided as they watched the heated exchange.
The row continued on Twitter, where the BBC's Tweet on the exchange received 227,000 views.
