Pilot declares Mayday emergency after engine failure 35,000 feet above Atlantic

A pilot was forced to declare a Mayday emergency on a holiday flight when one of its engines failed.

The Jet2 flight, which was travelling from Glasgow to Tenerife, was flying 35,000ft over the Atlantic when the error happened.

The Boeing 737-800 flight, carrying 191 passengers and six crew members, was 30 minutes from its final destination.

A Mayday alert was issued three quarters of the way through the flight on Monday after the failure and passengers were informed of the “controlled shutdown”.

The airline said there had been an “engine oil pressure” fault and the decision to fly with one engine was a precautionary measure.

It was forced to descend quickly by 10,000ft to 25,000ft to operate. An incident report was filed to the Civil Aviation Authority.

A spokesman for Jet2 said: "Flight LS155 departed Glasgow on Monday morning at 09:00 local time.

"Around 30 minutes prior to landing in Tenerife passengers were informed that there would be a controlled shutdown of one of the engines as a precautionary measure, due to a technical fault indication.

"The aircraft landed safely at 13.38. This has been logged with both the CAA and Spanish Aviation Authorities.”

The airline said it only ever switches to one engine if the flight is within 60 minutes of an airport.
