A strike planned by London Underground track patrol workers has been suspended after progress in talks.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union were due to walk out for 24 hours at 6.30am on Friday in a row over the use of private contractors to "casualise" jobs.

The dispute flared over the use of agency workers to check for any track defects.

The RMT said London Underground will suspend the training and assessment of non-permanent employees for track patrolling purposes for two weeks and the union will suspend its planned industrial action for the same period.

Steve Griffiths, chief operating officer at London Underground, said: "I welcome the RMT's decision to suspend this action to allow for further talks to take place."

A planned strike at the same time on Friday by 1,500 maintenance workers in a separate dispute over safety has also been suspended.

The RMT union announced yesterday they received confirmation that any changes will be put on hold for two weeks to allow for a comprehensive safety review.

Six proposed strikes over the coming months are still set to take place, with a 12-hour walk out scheduled for between 6.30am and 6.29pm on Sunday, March 6.
