Multi-million-pound plans to ban cars from sections of two major road networks in south London were unveiled today by transport bosses.

The new designs for Vauxhall and Wandsworth Town would see both gyratories removed and new bus and cycle lanes run through the town centres.

Transport for London claims its plans would reduce traffic and make the areas “safer and more pleasant”.

Cars would be banned from parts of Wandsworth High Street, which would be exclusively used by buses and cyclists.

Cycle Superhighway 8 would also be extended to the town centre.

The one-way system around Vauxhall town centre would be made two-way, while a beefed-up network for cyclists involving improved lanes and new crossings would be brought in.

The plan is for the network to connect to Cycle Superhighway 5.

TfL’s surface transport boss Leon Daniels said: “Both Wandsworth and Vauxhall are set for dramatic and much needed changes, bringing a simplified, safer and more pleasant environment that supports investment in the areas.

“The proposals have already been well supported by the public, and now we, and the local boroughs, are asking for feedback on the finer details.

“When finished, both these areas would be transformed for shoppers, visitors, pedestrians and cyclists.”

A spokesman added the improvements were part of TfL’s £4 billion roads investment.

“This programme will ensure that the capital’s roads are able to support the needs of a growing population of Londoners and commuters,” he said.

The consultation opens today. Vauxhall plans can be viewed here while the Wandsworth plans are here.
