Regent's Park cycle superhighway plans under fire from Westminster Council

Plans for a controversial cycle superhighway through Regent’s Park have come under fire from Westminster Council.

Councillors believe CS11, which would run between Swiss Cottage and Oxford Circus via non-segregated paths on the Outer Circle of Regent’s Park, would damage important pedestrian crossings and increase bus journey times.

Over 4,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Transport for London (TfL) to abandon the “catastrophically ill-planned scheme”.

A highly critical draft response by Councillor Heather Acton, cabinet member for sustainability and parking, said Westminster objects “on behalf of its residents and businesses” and “supports strong local feelings”.

Opponents argue TfL failed to take into account traffic disruption caused by the construction of the HS2 high-speed rail line and say there will be gridlock on surrounding roads as well as increased pollution.

The report said: “The city council supports the strong local feelings that TfL should adopt a holistic approach by considering the combined impacts of several schemes and major redevelopments in its modelling of CS11.

“There is real local concern that TfL’s modelling needs to consider the redevelopment of the St John’s Wood Barracks and the potential traffic impact of HS2.

“The city council is very concerned that TfL’s traffic modelling data demonstrates that the CS11 scheme is likely to result in significant detriment to pedestrian amenity at important crossing locations along Finchley Road.
