“It was the usual chaos, with LondonMidland unable to organise themselves – hopeless communication, seemingly little thought for passengers, and many staff who were simply ill-equipped, poorly trained or simply too stupid to help.”
A butcher arrived on the scene to remove the carcass of the animal before the line could re-open.
Network Rail said the trackside fence separating the line from a field had been trampled by the animal which weighed one tonne.
The accident occurred at 5pm when the Euston to Birmingham New Street service hit the cow at Hanslope, eight miles north of Milton Keynes.
London Midland Services were unable to run north of Milton Keynes on the “Northampton loop” until the line was cleared at 9pm.
But services remained affected for the rest of the evening until 11pm.
