Incident details

On 13 August at 15:54, an eight‑carriage Southern service travelling from London Victoria to Eastbourne left the tracks near Lewes. The train was travelling at roughly 65 mph when three of its carriages tipped onto their sides, trapping passengers. About 150 people were on board; 30 sustained injuries, of whom 20 required hospital treatment.

Investigation findings

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) released an interim report stating that a defect in the track geometry existed at the derailment site. CCTV footage from earlier services showed the fault, and an image published by the RAIB appeared to depict a buckled rail – a condition that can develop under high temperatures. The day of the accident was recorded as the UK’s hottest so far, with the nearest weather station measuring an ambient temperature of approximately 27 °C after a sustained period of hot and dry weather.

The RAIB said its enquiry will examine the weather on 13 August, the condition of the track and embankment, the state of the train, and the effectiveness of any heat‑mitigation measures that may have been in place.
