Green Park station was closed by police tonight after a person fell onto the track.

The air ambulance was scrambled as paramedics and fire engines raced to the scene, while office from British Transport Police sealed off the station.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said fire fighters had been called because it was initially thought the man could be trapped, but he was freed by London Underground staff.

She said: "An adult male was not trapped, he was conscious and breathing.

"He was released from the track pit by Underground staff and treated by London Ambulance Service."

Anish Modgil, 26, from Hounslow was waiting on the platform when the incident unfolded.

He told the Standard: "I was waiting on the platform as usual, and the next thing I know is the train is 80 per cent on the platform and stays still.

"The doors wouldn't open for about 40 seconds, then the majority of the lights went off on the train.

"Next thing I know, the overhead PA is asking everyone to evacuate.

"At first I thought it was an explosion or something, then as I was leaving, I notice that someone from TFL ran onto the tracks."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: “We were called at 8.54pm to reports of a person on the tracks at Green Park station.

“We sent multiple resources including an ambulance crew, a member of our Hazardous Area Response Team and a doctor from London’s Air Ambulance.

"The first of our medics arrived on the scene in under three minutes.

“We took one patient, a man, to hospital.”

The evacuation sparked panic among many Londoners travelling in central London, with some fearing a security incident could be unfolding.

Matt Lee ‏tweeted saying: "Several fire engines, police cars & ambulances at green park station with air ambulance landing in the park... incredibly worrying situation."

While Felicity Lowde ‏said: "A blizzard of sirens, fire engines & helicopters going through Mayfair. What now? Everyone evacuated from Green Park station."

Tess Hulme ‏said: "So much scary stuff happening at Green Park. All emergency services plus air ambulance and station closed! Feels pretty mega."

And Claire Bell posted: ‏"Air ambulance helicopters, numerous police and ambulances. What the hell is happening at Green Park? So scared right now. #greenpark."

The station has since reopened.
