A smartphone claims to take the sharpest zoomed photographs using a design inspired by submarine periscopes.

While LG revealed an ultra-wide angle model for group selfies at Mobile World Congress, the 5X system by Oppo allows users to “capture highly detailed images” at a greatly zoomed rate.

Its Dual Camera Zoom system uses a “periscope” stack of lenses to push light through a prism and on to an angled telephoto lens.

By diverting the light’s natural path it gives the zoomed image a level of clarity far greater than its competitors, the company said.

The tech giant smartphone camera technology is so popular that it outsold Samsung in China last year.

The firm provided side-by-side comparison photographs with what looked to be an iPhone to prove the point.

A release date for the camera has yet to be set, but its F1 model, available in the UK, is a mid-range device boasting a front camera claimed to capture 44 per cent more light for clearer selfies.

Oppo’s invention is one of the huge leaps in phone camera technology showcased in Barcelona.

Sony also unveiled its 5.5inch Xperia XZ Premium smartphone, which has a 4K display and a “super vivid mode” for watching films.
