Sat-nav handlebars warn cyclists of theft and give directions during rides

Capable of being securely retro-fitted to most bicycles, the aluminium bars are equipped with a concealed, highly sophisticated GPS unit that “talks” to overhead satellites.

The security device will cost £240 and has been designed and developed by French firm Velco. They are powered by removable, rechargeable tubular batteries locked in at each end. Dubbed “Wink”, the device can be programmed with a smartphone app via Bluetooth link to give detailed route directions, telling riders when to turn.

Route guidance comes from two bright forward-facing LED lights which flash on whichever side the cyclist needs to turn.

As well as helping cyclists navigate unfamiliar terrain without having to glance down at maps or their phones, Wink contains sensors that instantly detect when the bicycle is moved, alerting the owner with a text message.

“If your bike is stolen you will be able to see exactly where it is, tracking it on your smartphone map thanks to the GPS link,” said Pierre Regnier, Velco CEO, who unveiled the device at the Movin’On transport exhibition in Montreal, organised by tyre giant Michelin.

The handlebars — which look just like the conventional kind — are securely fitted to bicycles so that they are difficult to remove.
