Conservatives at the General Election: What we know so far about Boris Johnson's party

Boris Johnson has hailed a political "earthquake" which saw Labour support crumble in its heartlands in the face of a Tory landslide at the election.

The Prime Minister was set to visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace with a comfortable majority after gambling on a snap election and winning big.

In his victory speech after retaining his own seat, he claimed a "powerful new mandate to get Brexit done" as his party headed for its biggest Commons win since the Thatcher era.

The Tories formerly secured a majority in the early hours of Friday. Mr Johnson later told jubilant aides in Conservative HQ: "We must understand now what an earthquake we have created.

"The way in which we have changed the political map of this country.

"We have to grapple with the consequences of that, we have to change our own party, we have to rise to the level of events, we must, we just answer the challenge that the British people have given us."

The Prime Minister's key message was that he would deliver Brexit, telling voters the Tories would "finish what we started" and take the UK out of the EU.

One of the first results to come through appeared to bear out the exit poll prediction as the Conservatives won Blythe Valley with a 10 per cent swing from Labour - a seat they had held since 1950.

Later, Labour lost their first frontbench politician of the night in Workington to a Tory gain. Shadow Education Secretary Sue Hayman’s majority was overturned, with the Conservatives receiving 20,488 votes from constituents compared to her 16,312.

The Tories were expected to make losses in London, where Labour claimed Putney.

A six per cent swing to the Liberal Democrats' Sarah Olney saw the Tory former London mayoral candidate Zack Goldsmith lose his seat west London seat of Richmond Park.

Former Conservative leader clung on to Chingford and Woodford Green in north-east London. His seat was a big target for Jeremy Corbyn's party

Dominic Raab also had a tough fight ahead of him, but he just about hung on to his seat in Esher and Walton with a majority of 2,743
