A group behind Britain's biggest ever anti-war demonstration has described the Chilcot report as “not the end, but the beginning” of achieving justice for lives lost during the Iraq war.

Stop the War Coalition - which helped organise the mass march by up to two million people against an attack on Iraq in February 2003 - is now calling for fresh action across the UK.

A public rally of over 250 people is being held this evening to discuss plans to proceed with legal sanctions against Tony Blair.

It has called on supporters to ensure Tony Blair is held accountable and “no longer considered fit for any office”.

A spokeswoman for Stop the War confirmed it would be proposing legal sanctions against Blair.

She said: “In terms of the evidence that has now been stated there is definitely a case for some form of impeachment or legal action and the families are keen for legal action as well.”

Responding to the report’s publication yesterday, Stop the War said: “This report would not have happened without our campaigns.

“It clear that Blair used lies and deception to get his way, that the war was unnecessary and illegal and that everything was done to ensure it went ahead.

“The anti-war movement and the millions who marched were vindicated by this report and we now demand justice.

These comments come after the coalition argued that failure to hold Blair to account for mistakes would be “proof that our system of government is broken.”

The People's Response to Chilcot public rally is taking place this evening at Mary Ward House at 7pm.
