Zac Goldsmith and Jeremy Corbyn set for Heathrow rally

Tory Mayoral hopeful Zac Goldsmith is set to join Jeremy Corbyn to speak at an anti-Heathrow rally, it emerged today.

Mr Goldsmith, the Labour leader and shadow chancellor John McDonnell will all be asked to address the cross-party event in Parliament Square next month.

Thousands are expected to attend the rally — making it the biggest yet — to pressure ministers into blocking a third runway. Anti-expansion group HACAN said: “It will be MPs speaking who have been prominent in the fight, like Zac and John. There will also be invites going to other big-name speakers like Jeremy Corbyn.”

Mr Goldsmith’s opposition to Heathrow has won him a reputation for fearlessness in dealing with his own party leadership.

Westminster council leader Philippa Roe backed Mr Goldsmith’s bid to stand for London Mayor, calling him the “only credible Conservative candidate”. Ms Roe — who herself had stood for the Tory nomination — said: “Zac has a heavyweight record as a campaigning MP, unafraid to stand up to the government in negotiations.
