Six people were rushed to hospital after a fire broke out at a three-storey block of flats in Woolwich.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze on Edge Hill at around 1.30am today.

Around 10 people were evacuated from the building, while six people were rescued by firefighters.

Five adults and a child were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The London Fire Brigade said multiple flats were damaged due to the heat of the fire, while around three garages in the surrounding area and two vehicles were completely destroyed.

The blaze was brought under control at 3.59am, LFB says.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Brigade's Control Office took the first of 26 calls at 01.35 and mobilised fire crews from Plumstead, East Greenwich, Eltham and other surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control at 0359.
