Putney Bridge Tube station and offices evacuated as police probe suspect package

A Tube station was shut and offices nearby evacuated today as police investigated a suspect package.

Putney Bridge station was closed after the suspicious item was discovered on the street outside this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Putney Bridge Approach at the junction with Fulham High Street shortly before 1pm.

Police confirmed officers investigated a suspect package and the incident was stood down at about 2.30pm.

Pictures emerged on Twitter of officers guarding a huge police cordon at the scene.

Luke Hurst wrote: "A lot of police at Putney Bridge following security alert outside station #London."

Sandra Ayebazibwe tweeted: "Potential threat at Putney Bridge Station. All roads have been closed off."

Pedro De Sousa said: "Premier Inn closed off police everywhere at Putney Bridge."

Staff working in offices nearby also reported being evacuated.

Rob Debenham tweeted: "Just been evacuated from our office in Putney Bridge. Suspect package believed to be found near local TA headquarters..."

Transport for London confirmed the station was closed while staff responded to a security alert.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We are investigating a suspicious package. Cordons are in place.”
