A man has been arrested on suspicion of burgling a Jewish all-girls school in north London after he was detained by Shomrim patrol officers.
Members of the volunteer security service apprehended the suspect after he allegedly forced his way into Bnos Zion of Bobov in Amhurst Park on Friday night.
Video footage posted by the group on social media appears to show a man in a long red head scarf being escorted out of the building. He can be seen placing his hands behind his head and kneeling as two officers take him into custody.
Shomrim contacted the Metropolitan Police who arrived at the scene after 9.20pm.
A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He has since been bailed and the investigation is ongoing, police say.
It comes as London’s Jewish community remains on high alert following a major arson attack on four ambulances belonging to the Jewish volunteer organisation Hatzola in Golders Green on March 23.
Bnos Zion of Bobov is an independent Orthodox Jewish day school for girls which serves the local Bobov community and primarily provides education for girls aged two to 16.
The school’s education is grounded in the principles of the Torah, as students follow a religious studies curriculum in the morning before moving to the standard academic curriculum in the afternoon.
Chief Inspector Steve Connolly, the Met’s local policing lead for Hackney, said: "At around 21:20hrs on Friday, 3 April officers were called by Shomrim to a report of a burglary at a school in Amhurst Park, N16.
"Officers responded and a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He has since been bailed and the investigation is ongoing.
"We know that concerns remain high – particularly for Jewish communities – and we continue to have an enhanced policing plan focused around vulnerable areas to protect communities, disrupt offenders and tackle crime."
