A major motorway ground to a halt after a serious collision near a busy airport.

The M11 in Essex was closed northbound between J6 (M25) and J7 (Harlow) earlier this afternoon as Essex Police and National Highways officers attended the scene.

Three vehicles, two cars and a van, were reportedly involved in the collision. It remains unclear if anyone was seriously injured.

In an update at 2pm this afternoon, National Highways said: “The vehicles involved in the earlier collision on the M11 southbound, between J7 and J6 have now been recovered from the scene.”

All lanes have been reopened but there are currently delays of up to 25 minutes on the major motorway.

Earlier images from the scene showed huge traffic jams with vehicles at a near standstill on the motorway which passes London Stansted Airport.
