UK house fire in Hounslow prompts murder probe; Canadian officials note similar arson worries

A house fire in Hounslow, west London, has been classified as a murder investigation after it claimed the life of a 48‑year‑old woman and left eight other people with injuries.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the property on Berkley Avenue in the early hours of Wednesday following reports of a fire. The London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police attended the scene. Nine people were taken to hospital; one of them, the 48‑year‑old woman, later died. Her family have been notified and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

The investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Neil John. He said the enquiry is progressing quickly and that the fire is believed to have been started deliberately. DCI John described the incident as isolated to a single residential address but acknowledged the impact on the local community.

Police have appealed for anyone with relevant information – including CCTV, door‑bell camera or dash‑cam footage – to contact them. Calls can be made to 101 quoting CAD 359/19Aug, or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their website.

The case echoes concerns raised by Canadian fire officials about the growing risk of arson in residential areas. The incident was first reported by the source report.
