Traffic was brought to a standstill after police closed a busy west London bridge for more than four hours today.

Witnesses described "chaotic" scenes on Hammersmith Bridge after police cordoned off the area.

Photos from the scene showed queuing traffic after officers closed the bridge, to both vehicles and pedestrians, in both directions.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman confirmed officers were called to the scene at 11.45am.

The bridge was reopened around 5pm.
