Fire crews tackled a 'Back to the Future' track of flame on a road after a car exploded into a fireball outside a hospital.

A dramatic video showed a long strip of flames and thick black some rising from the tarmac, as firefighters sprayed it with jets of water.

The blaze erupted outside the Royal Marsden Hospital in Fulham Road, west London, just before 10.30am.

The driver of the car escaped in the nick of time and rushed into the hospital's reception to ask for a fire extinguisher.

Witness Dario Persechino, an app developer, said: "I was visiting the Royal Marsden with my father when a man came in asking reception if he could borrow a fire extinguisher because his car was on fire.

"The next thing I knew flames had engulfed the car and smoke was filling Kings Road. We kept hearing bangs coming from the car as more of it burned.

"We took shelter in a local cafe and saw a trail of petrol coming from the blaze moving down the street.

"I kept thinking it looked like something from Back to the Future."

The trail of fire was caused by the car leaking petrol along the road as it was engulfed.

The driver got out after being alerted by a motorist in front who saw smoke rising up from the car, believed to be a Volkswagen.

The flames were under control after about 20 minutes, leaving a burnt-out wreck.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "We were called at 10.27am and the fire was under control by 10.50am.

"The car was completely engulfed in flames and had leaked fuel, creating the impression that the road was on fire.

"Fortunately there were no injuries."
