Pet owners who fail to pick up dog poo will see their canines shamed with “wanted-style” photo fits or “pugshots” circulated around east London.

Barking and Dagenham is now using cutting-edge DNA technology in a bid to rid public spaces of dog mess.

A computer-generated image of the dog perpetrator will be created from DNA samples taken from the poo - which will revealed distinguishing traits such as gender, breed, coat texture and length, and eye colour.

The council has already appealed to dog owners to register their animal and provide DNA samples. Registered owners caught leaving dog mess will be fined.

The council hope those who do not register their animals will be shamed in to picking up their mess after seeing the “pugshots.” Owners of unregistered animals will face on-the-spot £80 fines for not supplying DNA information also.

Darren Rodwell, the council’s Labour leader told The Times: “Millions of pounds have been invested in upgrading our parks and we want to protect them.”
