"People waiting at the bus stop were taking pictures and a lot of people from the local community came down delivering baubles, and we think people are going to come and add to it over the next week."
Sgt Jon Biddle from Lewisham Police, the man behind the Christmas tree, said he was really pleased it had been decorated ahead of the force's carol concert at 7pm tonight.
He told the Standard: "I did take it a bit personally - it did look really nice I thought, when it was nighttime and the lights were twinkling.
Festive: the finished tree
For Jimmy
"It's only the second year that we've had the tree outside the police station - it was my idea. Ultimately it's about the community.
"I'm a born and bred Lewisham boy, and I think we really need to make contact with the community, and Christmas is one of the times we should be doing that - we're not the police, we're their police."
"I was mulling over what we could do [about the tree] when our great friends at For Jimmy asked if they could come down and sort it, and they have been excellent, as they have been all year.
"The response has been absolutely fantastic, not just from For Jimmy, who really kindly came down and decorated the Christmas tree for free, which is great, but also the community support has been fantastic."
