Many deaths are of babies born prematurely or with congenital defects but 500 a year are of babies carried for 40 weeks and alive at the onset of labour.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has started a project, Each Baby Counts, asking every maternity unit in the UK to send data on stillbirths to a central database. The hope is better research will reduce full-term stillbirths to 250 by 2020.
