A man has died and a woman is fighting for life after a Mercedes crashed into pedestrians in north London.

Police sealed off the Willesden Lane junction with Walm Lane at around 11.30pm on Saturday after the collision.

Dramatic images published on social media showed paramedics battling to save the lives of the pair on the roadside, near a pedestrian crossing.

Despite their efforts a man, aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, in her late 20s, has been rushed to a central London hospital where her condition is described as life-threatening.

Police say a passenger from the Mercedes C Class car fled from the accident.

Meanwhile, the driver needed treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

After he was released, police arrested him on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink driving.

He is currently being quizzed by detectives at a north London police station.
