A young man is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in a “machine gun” attack in north-west London, witnesses have said.

Residents nearby described hearing as many as 11 gunshots as the horror unfolded in Lawrence Avenue, Stonebridge, on Thursday evening.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was rushed to hospital suffering life-threatening injuries shortly after 8.30pm.

One nearby resident said police ordered people to remain indoors after they arrived at the scene.

He told the Standard: “From what I can tell, he was sitting in his car when he got into an argument with someone who then shot at him with a machine gun [at least] 11 times.”

Dramatic footage from the scene showed shocked onlookers gathered in the street in the aftermath of the shooting.

A forensics tent is erected at the scene

Police vehicles and ambulances could also be seen lining the street in the video, which was uploaded to Twitter.

The road was closed while police investigated

Images showed the road taped off as police stood guard.

A crime scene remained in place while officers continued to investigate on Thursday evening.

No arrests have been made.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: “A man, believed to be aged in his 20's, has been taken to a central London hospital with injuries that are believed to be life-threatening.

“A crime scene is in place.”
