A violent thug who knocked an 80-year-old pensioner unconscious in a road rage attack has been jailed for 16 months.

Great-grandfather Paul Eva was crossing the road in Penge, south-east London, with his wife when he had a "verbal altercation" with John Dugdale, 56.

Dugdale got out his car, ran after the pensioner and pushed him into a brick wall before fleeing the scene.

The shocking attack was caught on CCTV and released by police in a bid to catch the driver.

After police released footage of the incident, Detective Constable Luke Thomson said the victim suffered "horrific injuries" which could have cost him his life.

Dugdale handed himself in a month after the attack and pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

He was sentenced to 16 months at Croydon Crown Court today.

Judge Elizabeth Lowe told the defendant he carried out a "cowardly attack", saying: "You were obviously intent on violence against him from the moment you left your car."

Mr Eva, speaking out court, said Dugdale "deserved" to be jailed after treating him with "complete contempt".

He told Sky News: "I don't think he was apologetic at all. He was just sad he got caught."
