A New York police officer has died after being shot in the head during a gun battle in Manhattan's East Harlem.

Police said 33-year-old Randolph Holder was killed in pursuit of a suspect following reports of shots being fired.

He was gunned down after police arrived at the scene of a shoot-out between two rival gangs at about 9pm yesterday.

A bike-riding gunman led two police officers on a chase up First Avenue and then over a footbridge, the New York Post reported, quoting police sources.

The shooter then turned, fired, and Holder was apparently struck in the forehead.

Another police officer is said to have returned gunfire.

The suspect was later captured several blocks away with gunshot wound to his leg. Three other men were taken into custody and are being questioned.

Holder is the fourth New York police officer killed in the line of duty in the last 11 months.
