A football fan accused of homophobic chanting during last month’s Premier League clash between Everton and Chelsea is due in court.

Ethan Davies, 21, who lives on The Wirral in Merseyside, has been charged with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour as well as alleged indecent chanting during the match at Stamford Bridge on March 18.

According to the charge before Westminster magistrates court, Davies is accused of “chanting Chelsea Rent Boy” during the match.

The game, between a struggling Chelsea side and relegation-threatened Everton, finished 2-2, in what proved to be Graham Potter’s penultimate game in charge in west London.

Davies, from the village of Greasby in northwest England, is expected to appear in the dock on Monday morning to face two charges.

It is said he “caused harassment, alarm, or distress” in the incident and is accused of breaching the 1991 Football Offences Act.

Earlier this month, Wolves fans were issued with a warning during a match after homophobic chants were aimed at Chelsea fans. West Midlands Police said after the game that three arrests had been made.

Investigations have also been launched in recent months after “rent boy” chants were heard at matches involving Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Spurs.

Davies is expected to enter a plea to the charges on Monday.
