A nine-year-old boy has been shot dead in an alley near his grandmother’s house in Chicago.

Tyshawn Lee was “with an unknown number of individuals” when an argument broke out and a number of shots were fired, police said.

Chief of Detectives Dean Andrews said the boy had several gunshot wounds to his upper body.

“It’s unclear if this was a targeted incident or a tragic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he added. Tyshawn was pronounced dead about 4.40pm yesterday.

A basketball that he took to school every day was found near his body in Gresham, a neighbourhood in south Chicago.

The boy’s mother, Karla Lee, said her son had dreams of playing in the NBA. She said he told her: “Mom, when I get older I’m going to take care of you, I’m going to get you a new house.”

“He was going to make me real proud of him. I believed every word my son said,” she said.

“He’s a good kid. He didn’t deserve that, he didn’t deserve that,” she said through tears. “Emotions? They’re gone. I don’t have my baby no more.”
