Richard E Grant joins Downton Abbey cast

Richard E Grant is set to become the latest star to appear in Downton Abbey.

The 56-year-old actor will play a guest who visits the Grantham family in series five of the ITV drama, which will be broadcast in the autumn. Apparently he will appear in several episodes - but warned recently that he is never cast as a romantic hero.

Grant, whose 30-year film career began with a leading role in Withnail and I, will take on the role of Simon Bricker.

Other stars lined up to appear in upcoming episodes include Bafta-nominated actress Anna Chancellor and actor Rade Sherbedgia.

Chancellor, who recently took to the stage in the West End production of Private Lives, will play the character of Lady Anstruther, while Sherbedgia, known for his roles in Eyes Wide Shut and Snatch, will play a Russian refugee who has fled the Russian Revolution after the First World War.

The show's executive producer, Gareth Neame, said: "We are delighted to welcome these talented actors to the world of Downton.

"The characters they play are set to bring yet more excitement and intrigue to the show."

Downton, which will return for a Christmas special in 2014, boasted 12 million viewers last year.
