It was slightly strange to be in the heart of Tuscany and not have one person mention a painting. Siena, Florence, San Gimignano were all nearby, but there was no question of going. For those lucky enough to know Italy well, it was rather a relief - no culture guilt, but for those whose trips to Tuscany are rare, it did seem a waste. I am sure visits could have been arranged but going off-piste was definitely not encouraged. However, by mid-week we were judged institutionalised enough to risk a couple of trips, to a different kind of Italian art - the nearby Prada factory outlet shop. Currently too poor even for that, I made do with trying on the clothes I brought with me, and decided the week probably had a point. I felt marvellous, my skin was clear, my hips slimmed down, and my legs could bend in ways they had not done for years.
