The Crush: Bridget Jones

Hannah Horvath and Miranda may have helped to fill a Bridget Jones-shaped hole in our lives, with their wonky sexual encounters, awkward bodies and general bumbling ridiculousness, but neither can beat the original ‘voice of a generation’.

We left our favourite nine-stone-something singleton slumped over a large glass of Chardonnay back in 1999, and enjoy imagining what she’s been up to since then. Thankfully, with Helen Fielding’s follow-up book, a new Working Title film starring Renée, Hugh and Colin again (yay!), and a Lily Allen-penned musical all due out this year, we don’t have to imagine much longer.

We can’t wait to see if Bridge has embraced social media (#somany hilarious possibilities), become a yummy mummy, quit fags or taken up alternate fasting. We just hope she isn’t super-rich or successful, or in an appropriate and mutually loving relationship with a handsome man, because we simply couldn’t cope.

What we’ve always loved most about Ms Jones is that she is VG at making us feel great about ourselves. No pressure, Helen Fielding, but the woman we wish was our BFF had better be just as much of a shambles as ever.
