Watch: First review in Audi's latest SUV

Compare the first Audi Q5, that appeared in 2008, with this latest model eight years later and Audi seem to have managed the opposite of what many do – the new Q5 is about 90kg lighter than the first model.

This is largely due to the new MLB platform, a modular unit rolling out across the VW Group. Above it the bodywork is unusually aerodynamic which should bring more benefits, including low noise.

Aerodynamic or not, the look is definitely more off-road and rugged. The cabin, meanwhile, conforms to the usual exceptionally high standards we’d expect, aided by the addition of the 12.3in Virtual Cockpit as an option. Infotainment screens will be either 7.0in or 8.0in and there will even be the possibility of a new head-up display.

In terms of engines, the range will reflect much of those offered in the A4. There will be four-cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel with a hybrid to follow. When it’s launched the new Q5 will be available with a 2.0-litre diesel engine with three outputs – 148, 161 and 187bhp – and a 3.0-litre diesel with 282bhp. These will be joined by a single 2.0-litre petrol engine with 249bhp.
