Volvo V90 unveiled. Again

Leaked images of what the new V90 looks like made their way onto the internet a while back, but here is the official version, just ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva motor show.

You’ll have seen what much of it looks like anyway, if you’ve seen the new S90 saloon or the XC90. There’s the same and welcome range of safety equipment as those two siblings. Volvo’s IntelliSafe Assist adds in several semi-autonomous systems like a lane-keeping aid and road sign recognition. There is also autonomous emergency braking, and detection for things like pedestrians and large animals – sometimes hard to tell apart.

As well as this the optional IntelliSafe Surround adds in further security in the form of blind spot information, rear collision warnings and more. It’s safe to say that safety is still very much a Volvo core attribute.

But they do actually need some of that dangerous forward movement, so every Volvo comes with an engine. It is likely that the most popular one in the V90 will be the D4, a 2.0-litre diesel with a two-stage turbo. That puts out 187bhp and a torquey 295lb ft of torque. Company figures are 62.7mpg and 119g/km so that should suit a lot of drivers.

If you want a big petrol engine, and not many will, then there is a T6, which has a supercharged four-pot engine with 315bhp and 295lb ft of torque. That’s nice, but the not nice bit is consumption of 38.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 169g/km.

But there is a T8, which is a plug-in hybrid. That has a 2.0-litre diesel engine as well as an electric motor. Together they put out a splendid 401bhp and 472lb ft of torque, yet they also claim 134.5mpg and just 47g/km of CO2. This engine, like all the others, is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We’re not expecting deliveries until this autumn, but we should know prices long before then.
