Review: Skoda Kodiaq Scout 2017

Because SUVs are now part of the mainstream, one of their original defining characteristics – go-anywhere ability – has been tempered. Many of today’s 4x4-look machines don’t even have four-wheel drive; the genuine mud-plugger is now a niche product.

Some brands, however, are ensuring that even though their SUV ranges have mass-market appeal, there’s still a variant in the range that should appeal to those who need more rough ground abilities. Take Skoda, whose Kodiaq seven-seat large SUV range is now topped by a model that does just that – the Scout.

It has all the well-liked traits of the regular Kodiaq, from a classy interior to a capable 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. But it also has a clever four-wheel drive system with off-road assist electronics, adjustable dampers and differential lock, hill descent control and, to help it cope a bit better off-road, a raised-up ride height. There’s tougher underbody protection and, if you miss that, extra silver trim on the outside to mark it out from other Kodiaqs.

Off road, it’s now immensely capable – probably more able than almost any buyer will actually demand, which is reassuring. Nothing we presented it with was a struggle; across muddy tracks and scarred green lanes, you’ll have little to worry about. But this hasn’t spoiled the car’s on-road handling either. The lack of roll is very impressive and direct steering encourages sporty driving.

The pay-off for this is a firm ride, which is restless over most road surfaces. Drivers will think it a price worth paying, but passengers may not. And the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine isn’t the quietest around, although it is smooth and strong, with ample power in reserve, and good economy. Our tip is to pair it with the best-choice DSG automatic rather than the standard six-speed manual.

Inside, the Scout has a similar level of equipment to the Kodiaq SE, including a superb set of Alcantara seats, plus eight-speaker stereo, LED ambient lighting and cruise control. The large 9.2in touchscreen is impressive as well. Pity about the cheap-looking fake wood, which lessens an otherwise very solid and premium-feel interior.

It’s roomy, certainly for the first two rows of seats, although the third row is admittedly best left for children. Or, fold the seats flat into the floor and enjoy a cavernous boot.

It all stacks up well. There’s just one problem – that extra off-road prowess comes at a price; even in basic 1.4-litre petrol guise, the Scout costs £32,330. Our test car was almost £36,000. That’s far too much for a car that, in standard Kodiaq SE trim, does pretty much everything the Scout does, for a far cheaper list price. If you need the ability, it’s a good choice, but for most, the standard car will do just fine, and save a fortune.
