Morgan joins the electric revolution

We’ve all heard of electric organs. But here’s an electric Morgan.

The Morgan EV3 is less Kraftwerk or Tubeway Army and more… well, fun. In the ever-lovable Malvern company’s own words, it ‘embraces new technology, delivers responsible driving excitement and continues to celebrate traditional British craftsmanship.’

It does so by taking a standard 3 Wheeler and replacing its petrol engine with a 62bhp electric motor. Despite this, the use of carbon panels means it’s lighter than the original at less than 500kg (yes, for the whole car), with a 0-62 time of 9.0 seconds and a max speed of 90mph hardly doing justice to what’ll happen when you point it at a set of corners.

Electric cars are sometimes accused of being futuristic to the point of blandness, but that’s unlikely to be something anyone says about this one. The interior is done out in wood, brass and polished aluminium, and there’s a magneto switch for the drive selector. Retro, quirky and cool. What’s not to love?

The EV3 even has a usable range, with its not-too-heavy battery pack taking it 150 miles on a full charge. For a car like this, that ought to be just fine.

Morgan says the car’s price will be comparable to that of the 3 Wheeler. That suggests it’ll cost from about £26,000, give or take.

Don’t make an EV3 the centrepiece of your plans for this summer, though. Morgan is currently putting ten pre-production models through a customer testing programme, after which it plans to go into production towards the end of this year.
