The ST200 has been sharpened up in lots of fine ways, with enhanced steering and braking to go with next-gen torque vectoring and stability control. Its suspension has been improved, too, dropping its centre of gravity by 1.5cm and giving it tauter handling than ever.

So you’ve got a car that can handle its performance better, and that’s good because it has more performance. The 1.6 Ecoboost engine now snorts out 197bhp and 214lb ft, which improves its 0-62 time to 6.7 seconds and its top speed to 143mph.

That’s until you get fresh with the overboost button. Do that and the magic numbers change to 212bhp and 236lb ft, which is altogether more magic – especially as the engine can sustain that level of boost for what you have to assume will be a thoroughly action-packed quarter of a minute.

Should that not be enough to convince you, the revised ST comes with new black alloys and part-leather Recaro seats, as well as red brake calipers and illuminated kick plates.

Ford says the new ST200 will become available here this summer – albeit only in limited numbers. They won’t struggle to find homes – because with an all-new Fiesta likely to make its debut next year, this will be the last hot version of the current model.
