Mercedes-AMG A45: review

A screaming four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol turbo is the powerplant behind the A45 experience. Producing 376bhp and 350lb ft of torque, it’s complemented by a fast-changing, seven-ratio, dual-clutch box. The highly tuned drivetrain shifts the Merc to that 62mph benchmark in 4.2 seconds, aided by a drive mode selector that incorporates various dynamic settings from Comfort through to Sport+.

All of these are highly accomplished, of course, but the most extreme mode is truly the stuff of thrills; the power delivery is as smooth as it is savage, all served up on a beautifully controllable and endlessly adjustable plate.

The superlative relationship between driver and machine continues inside the cabin, where Mercedes’ premium appointments, fit and finish are carried over from the A45’s executive saloon stablemates.

This most un-hot-hatch-like refinement is reflected when driving in Comfort mode, which delivers a ride quality you wouldn’t think possible with such soul-stirring handling – spot-on dynamics that can be further enhanced with the limited-slip front differential, adaptive shocks and additional Race setting of the optional AMG Dynamic Drive pack.

So far, so successful, but does it trump the RS3? Maybe it’s the Audi’s extra cylinder, but its sense of occasion is something the A45 can’t quite live up to – and, for that matter, neither can the Merc touch its fellow countryman’s state-of-the-art touchscreen interface.

Yet while superior day-to-day usability is the Audi’s strong suit, we keep returning to the Mercedes-AMG’s sensational driving ability. If your heart rules your head when considering your next premium hot hatch purchase, this’ll be the one you go for.
