Fiat 124 Spider to return

Fiat is planning to revise the classic 124 Spider name, in a convertible sports car that will use the platform of the legendary Mazda MX-5 as its base.

Set to arrive in the latter half of next year, the newcomer will draw on the Italian manufacturer’s 1960s heritage while offering very 21^st century performance, handling and kit.

Cosmetically, the rear-wheel-drive two-seater will disguise its Japanese base with a unique body that’ll feature a longer nose to evoke the original Spider’s jaunty styling.

It will also use Fiat’s own 138bhp 1.4 MultiAir II petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox from launch. An Abarth variant is likely as well.

Only in the cabin will the 124 Spider’s Mazda roots be particularly apparent; even the touchscreen for the infotainment is the same.

Full prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
