In Pictures: Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2 (review)

This should be a big seller. A cheaper, purer Lamborghini with rear-wheel drive. If it doesn’t prove to be then you can blame that first quality. Lambo owners tend to go for the max, provided it’s the most expensive, so this model may not get the sales it actually deserves.

At one level those people turning their noses up at it might have a point. There is less power – a mere 572bhp instead of 602bhp – only rear-wheel instead of all-wheel drive, so that’s pretty damning before we start. Yet it also weighs 33kg less and that’s interesting.

More than that, Lamborghini has worked on the suspension, tuning the active suspension, tweaking the electronics and so forth. Perhaps more importantly they’ve also done further work on the steering, to notably better effect. The revised rack may feel a touch over-assisted in Strada mode, but it spoke clearly to the driver in Sport or Corsa modes.

This means the handling and balance are improved over the LP610-4. The accent is on stability rather than fighter-jet twitchiness, and so you can make rapid progress in what might almost pass for a sensible manner. Except this simply isn’t a sensible car in any aspect.

It’s a riot, an occasion, a crowd-stopping bravura of screaming fury. You can chat all you like about the improved balance on turn in versus the hesitation to get the back end talking to you or misbehaving. You can tut-tut over the fact that peak power is made at ‘only’ 8000rpm, lower down the rev range than its sibling. You can sigh that the ride is still firm to the point of discomfort. But floor the throttle and everything else is drowned out.

The sheer drama of this Huracán makes any sensible thinking impossible. It’s crazily loud, immediate and violent. No other supercar is this in your face, deliberately, all the time. This is a big V10, normally aspirated, power and torque in immense, visceral quantities. It shouts about what it’s doing every inch of the way, and if that’s the kind of car you’re after, nothing will fit that bill quite as much as a Lamborghini.
