Audi reveals SQ7 performance SUV

Audi has unveiled its new full-size SQ7 performance crossover. The first model of the Q7 range to get the S prefix, the SUV will be available in Britain by the end of the year at around £70,000.

The newcomer is based on Audi’s most advanced chassis ever. This features a new electro-mechanical roll-stabilisation system, which uses electric motors running off a 48-volt circuit alongside the standard 12-volt set-up.

In a production-car world first, the circuit also operates an electric charge compressor in the engine. Alongside two normal turbos, this delivers three-way charge-compression for the 4.0-litre V8 diesel. It keeps the first turbo primed and ready to deliver full boost with virtually no throttle lag.

The resultant 429bhp and 663lb ft from just 1000rpm guarantee an exhilarating drive. An eight-speed auto transmission directs power to the four wheels, while there’s an optional torque-vectoring sport rear differential, too.

It all means a range-leading 4.8-second 0-62mph sprint, while a relatively efficient 38.2mpg and 194g/km are apparently achievable.

The SQ7 marks itself out from the normal Q7 range with subtle styling upgrades such as a unique grille, bumpers and quad exhausts.
