Audi A4 3.0 TDI 218 2016: review

The point is that this variant hits the sweet spot exactly in the centre. It must have been tempting to dial in more top end, and pump up the performance figures with the bigger engine. But instead Audi has done what people will really enjoy in the real world.

That engine is a total delight. It doesn’t feel that stressed, which means nor do you. Delivery is silky smooth, and truly effortless. They’ve kept it so you have lots of power available everywhere, rather than having to go hunting for it. Simply push the throttle a fraction and here it is, a steady and definite thrust of torque and power.

To go with that smooth power is the seven-speed S tronic auto transmission, and that’s equally refined in its delivery, although at stop-start levels it can snatch a fraction. Under all other circumstances, you are driving a delightful car that means you can cover the miles without getting tired or flustered. That feeling most definitely extends to the cabin.

Audi really has nailed it here. You’re read before about the quality of design and materials, along with the 7.0in MMI infotainment system, the adaptable, supportive seats, the space for you and your passengers, and all the rest, so we won’t go over it again. It’s simply a brilliant interior, untroubled by noise from engine, road or wind.

Handling is excellent, steering entirely adequate. This is where it separates out from competitors like the Jaguar XE or the BMW 3 Series. It’s simply not as exciting or rewarding to drive. But, really, people don’t buy these, or get given them as company cars, because they’re wannabe sports cars.

These are vehicles for covering the miles in comfort, leaving you fresh for the meeting with business counterpart or mistress.

Emissions and consumption figures are close to the 2.0-litre diesel model, yet you gain a lot more.

We’d not bother with the quattro option, nor the adaptive comfort suspension option. This car just doesn’t need them or justify their expense. It’s just great as it is. It’s the first new A4 to gain our five-star rating. Enough said.
