Do you need to post a Facebook copyright status?
Over the last few days - when Facebook hasn’t been suffering an outage - you likely have seen several posts popping up on your feed advising you to repost a long spiel of legal jargon.
The reason? Poster’s believe it will protect their photos and other information from copyright violations.
The legal notices tend to look like this:
A similar hoax appeared earlier this year, peddling claims that Facebook owns the rights to people’s photos, videos and other content.
So do you need to post the status to keep your Facebook rights?
In a word, no. The claims have been thoroughly debunked, most notably by myth-busting site Snopes.
As it goes, your legal rights are determined not by any status you post, but by the social network’s Terms of Service, which all users agreed to upon creating an account. Information about how Facebook uses your information is available there and in the network’s data policy.
