Smart: check tyre pressures with the FOBO TPMS appEveryone knows drivers should check tyre pressures regularly — the AA recommends every two weeks. Few bother, though, and it’s easy to overlook.
That, combined with safety issues, is why tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are a legal requirement in new cars. Fortunately, there’s now a solution for older cars, too — FOBO Tyre, a Bluetooth TPMS, available at Maplin.
Priced at £99.99, it comes with four electronic valve caps with built-in sensors, four locking nuts, a bespoke spanner and a transmitter.
Once the caps are synchronised to your smartphone, it takes seconds to open the app to see each tyre’s pressure and temperature. When the system detects a change beyond user-set parameters, your phone alerts you.
Advantages? It’s much easier and quicker to check tyres than with a standard tyre pressure gauge. Disadvantages? It’s slightly fiddly to set up — it takes roughly half an hour — and, when you do need to re-inflate, you must first unscrew the locking nut, then re-synchronise the cap with your phone. But it’s a small price to pay.
