As autumn rolls in, it’s time, once again, to wrap up in a coat.

The first big buy of the season, a coat can be an exciting – if budget-busting – expenditure.

But who said wrapping up in style need break the bank?

We have unearthed four main coat styles to know from the autumn/ winter 2018 runways, and dug around for our absolute favourite high street versions.

All that’s left for you to decide is which trend you will choose.

Heritage Tweed

Fashion’s love affair with heritage checks and tweeds shows no signs of waning for autumn, with everyone from Balenciaga, Erdem, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs embracing the most country-centric of yarn.

Whether you wear it oversized as at Miu Miu, or Withnail-esque as at Lemaire, a tweed coat is a hardworking winter wardrobe fix. Pair with neon or sequins for ultimate style points.

Teddy Bear

Not quite faux fur, not exactly fleece, and endlessly cheaper than real shearling, this season's super snug winter warmer is the teddy bear coat. Embrace neutral Seventies hues as at Tod's or opt for a pop of colour, like the terrific tomato red on offer at Amo Couture.

Whether fleece or fluffy, real shearling or faux, the guiding mantra is the bigger and cuddlier the better.

Leather Trenches

Banish that biker jacket to the back of the cupboard, this season’s leather jacket is all kinds of sleek and slick. From the trench styles seen at Acne, Max Mara and Miu Miu to the Seventies autumnal hues at Loewe and Chloé, leather coats proved themselves a fresh and versatile transitional staple.

Feeling adventurous? Try a pop of colour (we’ve got our eyes on the lilac suede number from Nasty Gal) or opt for a matrix-esque floor-length silhouette.

Animal Magic

Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford sent something in leopard, snake, zebra, leopard or tiger print down their autumn/winter runways, while Zara unveiled a whopping 64-piece animal print collection for autumn.

Bet Lynch fans will be pleased to hear that leopard is set to remain the season’s top (ahem) cat, but zebra, tiger and giraffe are galloping into the spotlight. Opt for something other than ocelot to stand out from the pack.

Fancy something fuzzy? Given the recent – and impressively extensive – industry ban on real fur, the pelts in vogue are most definitely faux.

The Luxe Puffer

The puffer jacket was big news for autumn 2017, and this winter it's set to make a comeback, only this season it’s had a makeover as evening attire. From the runway-dusting down coats in jewel tones seen at Juicy Couture, to the metallic numbers at Moncler, this season’s puffer is less polar explorer and more Puff Daddy.
