On Sunday night, Hollywood gathered to celebrate the Oscars. It’s the biggest night in any actor’s social calendar, but along with all the films nominated for awards – Sinners, One Battle After Another, Hamnet – there was also the question of fashion.

The Oscars is a slightly more formal affair than some of the more freewheeling ceremonies that precede it – the Actors Awards, Critics Choice Awards – and accordingly, celebs came dressed in their absolute best.

This year, that meant a blizzard of feathers. Demi Moore wore an emerald Gucci gown bursting with black plumage along with jewellery by Boucheron, while Nicole Kidman wore a pale pink Chanel number with a peplum waist and a whole load of them sewn to the bodice and train.

Topping them all was Teyana Taylor, whose gorgeous (also Chanel) black and white dress came complete with a luxurious, swooping ostrich feather train. That was a scene stealer – but even Paul Thomas Anderson, the director with whom she worked on One Battle After Another – wore them to clinch the statuette for Best Director.

When the stars weren’t rocking feathers, they were rocking sparkles. Fashion’s latest darling Odessa A’Zion proved that red carpet dressing doesn’t have to be boring in a diamond-encrusted, louche Valentino Haute Couture outfit that veered dangerously close to loungewear, while Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku showed off her (reportedly, nine months pregnant) belly in a green sequined Louis Vuitton dress.

Elle Fanning, meanwhile, went full-on classic glamour in a sequined white Givenchy by Sarah Burton number that showcased layers upon layers of tulle with a strapless bodice and lots of sparkles – while Gracie Abrams, appearing on the red carpet with boyfriend Paul Mescal, was sleek in black Chanel.

A little drama is also appreciated on the red carpet, naturally, and to that extent we had frills and gothic glamour galore. To pick up her Oscar, Jessie Buckley wore a gorgeous Chanel off-the-shoulder number that came in shades of red and pastel pink.

Chloe Zhao, the director of Hamnet, appeared wearing a black suit topped with a full-body black veil – a bold fashion choice, and one that suited her – while Chase Infiniti, the star of One Battle After Another, wore a gorgeous frilled Louis Vuitton dress with a scene-stealing train, and Frankenstein star Mia Goth was her match in lemon yellow Dior.

The men rarely get a look-in on nights like this, but there were also a few notable looks. Top of the list was Michael B. Jordan, who picked up his award in a black Louis Vuitton suit with a waist chain – and everybody’s favourite, Pedro Pascal, whose Chanel suit came with a chrysanthemum flower so large that he went jacket-less to better show it off. Oh, and spare a thought for Jack Connell, who wore the prosthetic vampire fangs from his film Sinners on the red-carpet. Why not.

As the afterparty continued into the night (and people celebrated their wins, or commiserated their losses) the looks continued to flow in. Case in point: Cara Delevingne, who turned up to the Vanity Fair afterparty in an excellent muscled Thom Browne Spring 2026 gown, while Kim Kardashian wore all sparkles and Zoe Saldana wore a striking lace Saint Laurent gown.
